Zhong Kui | Hold Still! | Traditional Hand-Painted Chinese Ink Figure Painting | 100x50cm

In ink, Zhong Kui's eyes flare wide like bells, a finger outstretched in a sharp command to halt, the right-sided colophon echoing this abrupt shout; beard bristling, frame jolting, the ink lines fierce, short and percussive. The thing being halted is not drawn, yet one clearly hears "Hold still!" cut through the air, an unmistakable, commanding force driving straight through the paper.

"Hold Still!" is Zhong Kui's briefest, most forceful command. At the critical instant, one sharp cry freezes evil in place, daring it not to move. The artist speaks of the power of guarding and stopping: faced with boundary-crossing wrong or a runaway impulse, what is sometimes needed is not lengthy argument but a clear, firm, decisive "no." Holding the line and calling halt in time—this resolve and steadiness is itself a powerful form of guardianship. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit. Each piece is an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
