Zhong Kui | Boundless Attainment | Traditional Hand-Painted Chinese Ink Figure Painting | 101x50cm

In cinnabar with a right-sided colophon, Zhong Kui opens his arms and heart, bearing grand and expansive; long beard and robes unfurl in every direction, the full rounded red lines spiraling upward as if a qi of blessing and virtue poured endlessly from around him, measureless—abundant yet never congested.

"Boundless Attainment" speaks of gain beyond measure. Zhong Kui bestows fortune and guards the home, believed to bring a virtuous household endless, flowing blessing; yet the artist means also an inner fullness—when the heart keeps kind intentions and walks openly, the peace, joy and goodwill one reaps are boundless, growing richer the more one gives, never diminished by sharing. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit. Each piece is an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
