Five Hundred Arhats · No.468 The Venerable Pure Liberation

'Pure liberation' means pure release, free from the bonds of affliction, ultimately pure in the gates of liberation, the knowledge-and-vision of liberation pure and stainless; the name marks one whose liberation is pure, ultimately free of bonds. The venerable makes a liberated gesture with an open look, possessing the freedom of pure release, beyond all fetters, stainless liberation, at ease without hindrance through a pure-liberated heart.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
