Five Hundred Arhats · No.445 The Venerable Sorrowless Virtue

'Sorrowless virtue' means endowed with the virtue beyond sorrow, far from worry and vexation, without sorrow or fear before any suffering, guiding beings through the sorrowless Dharma to ease; the name marks one without sorrow or vexation, at ease in himself. The venerable looks calm and relaxed, possessing the composure of being far from worry, without sorrow or fear, at ease in himself, guiding beings through sorrowless virtue.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
