Five Hundred Arhats · No.220 — Venerable Guardian of the Wondrous Dharma (Humiaofa)
“Guardian of the wondrous Dharma” means upholding the Tathāgata’s subtle, true Dharma, making it long abide and never be cut off—a guardian of the Buddha-Dharma; the name expresses one who takes Dharma-protection as one’s charge and transmits the holy teaching. The Venerable makes a protecting gesture with an earnest, solemn expression, possessing the responsibility of upholding the true Dharma, of carrying on the wisdom-life, of guarding the wondrous Dharma with an adamantine heart so it is never lost.
Painted by Li Zongyi in the traditional Chinese freehand (xieyi) ink style: the brushwork flows freely while layered tones of ink interplay, revealing the Arhat's spirit with only a few masterly strokes. The unpainted space breathes with Zen (Chan) atmosphere, balancing form and spirit and fusing religious solemnity with the refined charm of literati art. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice; every piece is a one-of-a-kind, irreproducible hand-painted original that combines devotional, artistic and collectible value.
