Five Hundred Arhats · Frontispiece — Opening of the Handscroll

This leaf is the frontispiece (opening) of Li Zongyi's hand-painted ink handscroll Five Hundred Arhats—not the portrait of any single arhat, but the opening that gathers and governs the entire scroll. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice; as the scroll unrolls slowly from this frontispiece, the holy assembly appears in sequence in boundless majesty. The frontispiece sets the guiding theme and leads the whole scroll; only viewed together with the five hundred individual figures does the completeness of the set appear. It is an indispensable part of this one-of-a-kind handscroll and an essential piece for collecting the entire work.

Li Zongyi painted this frontispiece in the traditional Chinese freehand (xieyi) ink manner: the brush moves with vigour and layered tones of ink interplay, while the unpainted space breathes with Zen (Chan) atmosphere. As the opening it gathers the momentum of the whole scroll and leads the Five Hundred holy assembly; together with the five hundred individual figures it forms the complete one-of-a-kind handscroll, uniting devotional, artistic and collectible value in an irreproducible hand-painted original.
