Five Hundred Arhats · No.317 — Venerable Stainless Treasury (Wugouzang)

“Stainless treasury” means the merit one contains is pure and without stain, like a pure bright jewel luminous within and without, the Dharma stored apart from all defilement; the name expresses one whose treasury of merit is pure and stainless. The Venerable has a bright, clean expression and a clear, transparent air, possessing the radiance of containing the stainless, of purity apart from defilement, of a pure bright jewel, taking stainless merit as one’s own-nature treasury.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the traditional Chinese freehand (xieyi) ink style: the brushwork flows freely while layered tones of ink interplay, revealing the Arhat's spirit with only a few masterly strokes. The unpainted space breathes with Zen (Chan) atmosphere, balancing form and spirit and fusing religious solemnity with the refined charm of literati art. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice; every piece is a one-of-a-kind, irreproducible hand-painted original that combines devotional, artistic and collectible value.
