“Keeper of the Vinaya treasury” means well receiving and upholding the Vinaya Piṭaka, disciplining the threefold karma of body, speech and mind by the Vinaya, keeping the precepts pure as one guards a bright pearl; the name expresses one who holds the precepts, whose Vinaya practice is without flaw. The Venerable settles his robes with a solemn expression and a dignified bearing, possessing the upright dignity of well keeping the Vinaya treasury, disciplining the threefold karma, with flawless precept-practice, guarding himself and the Dharma through pure Vinaya discipline.
Painted by Li Zongyi in the traditional Chinese freehand (xieyi) ink style: the brushwork flows freely while layered tones of ink interplay, revealing the Arhat's spirit with only a few masterly strokes. The unpainted space breathes with Zen (Chan) atmosphere, balancing form and spirit and fusing religious solemnity with the refined charm of literati art. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice; every piece is a one-of-a-kind, irreproducible hand-painted original that combines devotional, artistic and collectible value.
