Five Hundred Arhats · No.207 — Venerable Boundless Body (Wubianshen)
“Boundless body” means the Dharma-body is vast—reaching through all time and space, without edge or limit, free of measure, equal to the void; the name expresses one who realizes the boundless-body Dharma-body, whose measure equals the whole realm of reality. The Venerable has an open, unconfined expression and a vast, grand presence, possessing the breadth of a Dharma-body without bounds, of a heart that encloses the great void, of a bodily form pervading and present everywhere.
Painted by Li Zongyi in the traditional Chinese freehand (xieyi) ink style: the brushwork flows freely while layered tones of ink interplay, revealing the Arhat's spirit with only a few masterly strokes. The unpainted space breathes with Zen (Chan) atmosphere, balancing form and spirit and fusing religious solemnity with the refined charm of literati art. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice; every piece is a one-of-a-kind, irreproducible hand-painted original that combines devotional, artistic and collectible value.
