Five Hundred Arhats · No.101 The Venerable Who Removes Sorrow

His name means to remove the sorrow and affliction of self and others through the wisdom of the Dharma and bring ease; the name marks one skilled at consoling beings, lifting their pain and granting joy. The venerable wears a gentle, glad expression and looks at ease, possessing the compassionate skill of healing sorrow with the cool medicine of Dharma, gladdening the heart and leading beings from suffering to happiness.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
