Collection: "Beauties" Series | Minimalist Baimiao Linework (「白描」)

Li Zongyi's "Beauties" Series | Minimal Line-Drawing Ink (「白描」) · 4.5 sq ft

The entire "Beauties" series is painted in minimal line drawing (「白描」): purely ink lines, no colour applied (「不施一色」), with generous negative space and long lines flowing like drifting clouds, telling the whole grace of the Eastern woman. Eyes cast down, walking sideways, a flower in her hair, a backward glance — every stroke, every line carries feeling; paired with poetic inscriptions (「题词」), she seems near yet shy, leaving an endless aftertaste.

Technical Rarity: The Test of Pure Line Drawing

Line drawing is the barest of techniques and the least able to hide one's skill: once the brush lands, its density, speed and weight all live at the tip; lines stay concise while the qi (「气韵」) flows unbroken — the drape of the robe, the lift of a strand of hair, the reserve of a pose are all written by the breathing of the line, revealing decades of the artist's line-drawing mastery. There is no colour to conceal weakness, no ink mass to render with; line and negative space are the entire language. Each painting is a hand-painted one-of-a-kind original; once sold, it is gone forever.

Artistic and Collectible Value

Among contemporary ink works, a full-scale pure line-drawing series of beauties is extremely rare: it inherits the aesthetic lineage of traditional beauty painting while retelling Eastern beauty in a minimalist contemporary language — light, restrained and refined. The works suit the negative-space aesthetics of modern interiors, equally at home in a collection or on display; the series is scarce in number, with promising long-term value.
