Five Hundred Arhats · No.448 The Venerable Accomplished in Meaning

'Accomplished in meaning' means well accomplishing the meaning of all dharmas, penetrating the meaning through hearing, thinking and cultivating, accomplished in meaning with understanding and practice in accord, making the true Dharma's meaning clear; the name marks one accomplished in doctrinal understanding, understanding and practice both complete. The venerable makes a pondering gesture with a clear look, possessing the clarity of accomplishment in meaning, understanding and practice in accord, penetrating Dharma-meaning, accomplishing the true Dharma through clear understanding.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
