Five Hundred Arhats · No.446 The Venerable Boundless Action

'Boundless action' means the great action of a bodhisattva without edge, pervading the dharma-dhātu, liberating boundless beings through non-abiding action, action and vow endless; the name marks one whose action is boundless, pervading the dharma-dhātu. The venerable makes a vast-action gesture with a spacious look, possessing the breadth of boundless great action, pervading the dharma-dhātu, liberating through non-abiding action, saving boundless beings through boundless action.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
