Five Hundred Arhats · No.433 The Venerable Pouring the Rain of Dharma

'Pouring the rain of Dharma' means like a great cloud covering all, pouring the great rain of Dharma, moistening every being's parched heart-field, raining equally on high and low; the name marks one who rises like a cloud and pours Dharma-rain universally. The venerable makes a showering gesture with a broad look, possessing the breadth of a great cloud covering all, pouring Dharma-rain, equally moistening all, refreshing beings' heart-fields with the rain of Dharma.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
