Five Hundred Arhats · No.404 The Venerable Lotus-Pure

'Lotus-pure' means like a lotus rising from mud yet unstained, pure and free of defilement, beyond all stain through pure wisdom, the heart-flower in bloom; the name marks one pure as a lotus, beyond the dust and stain. The venerable looks clear-fragrant and clean, possessing the freshness of lotus purity, rising from dust unstained, bright beyond defilement, blooming the flower of awakening with a pure heart.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
