Five Hundred Arhats · No.395 The Venerable Liberating Through Psychic Power
'Liberating through psychic power' means converting beings through the six superknowledges and transformations, manifesting according to capacity, freely working marvels, drawing beings to the path through skillful psychic means; the name marks one free in psychic power, skilled in conversion. The venerable makes a manifesting gesture with a nimble look, possessing the agility of free psychic power, converting according to capacity, unhindered marvels, drawing every capacity through skillful psychic means.
Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
