Five Hundred Arhats · No.274 The Venerable Voice of Majesty

'Voice of majesty' means the fame of majestic virtue is heard afar like great thunder, possessing great power and merit, renowned through the ten directions; the name marks one complete in majesty, whose name is illustrious. The venerable has an august presence and a solemn look, possessing the dignity of majestic adornment, renown through the ten directions, sounding like thunder, subduing māra and outsiders through the power of majestic virtue.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
