Five Hundred Arhats · No.267 The Venerable Wish-Fulfilling Wheel

'Wish-fulfilling wheel' combines the cintāmaṇi wish-jewel and the Dharma wheel, granting every wish and turning the unsurpassed wheel, also echoing Cintāmaṇicakra, who saves beings through the wish-jewel; the name marks one who fulfils wishes to fit the occasion through the wondrous wheel. The venerable holds a bead or wheel gesture with a rounded look, possessing the subtlety of granting wishes, the ever-turning wheel, adapting to the occasion, saving beings through wish-fulfilling wondrous Dharma.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
