Five Hundred Arhats · No.204 The Venerable Bodhisattva Voice

'Bodhisattva voice' is the sound of raising the great awakening mind, the tone of seeking above and liberating below, vast as the bodhisattva heart; the name marks one who utters the awakening voice and rouses the deluded through the Mahāyāna sound. The venerable seems to send forth the Dharma-tone with a vast expression, possessing the breadth of raising bodhicitta, voicing the great-vehicle teaching so hearers awaken the unsurpassed intent.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
