Five Hundred Arhats · No.94 The Venerable Who Contemplates Indra's Net

'Indra's net' is the image in which one jewel reflects a thousand, layer upon layer without end, and 'contemplate' is to deeply observe; the name marks one who meditates on the net's boundless, unobstructed interpenetration, contemplating the dependent origination of the dharmadhātu where one is all. The venerable is lost in far-reaching thought with deep-set features, showing the profundity of entering the Dharma realm through endless origination, where wisdom and its object merge.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
