In ink, Zhong Kui is bare-chested with belly exposed, sword level at his waist, one hand making a shooing gesture, brows half-stern half-smiling, beard swaying with the motion; the ink is witty and lively, soft within the firm, as if he were laughing-scolding a mischievous little spirit off the stage—authority shot through with an elder's warmth and humor, the scene full of droll charm.

"Off with You Now" is an affectionate scold that turns the tension of expelling evil into droll everyday life. Zhong Kui does not ruthlessly exterminate the little spirit but shoos it like an elder chasing a naughty child—"off with you now," a bark and a smile, clear about right and wrong yet leaving room. The artist teaches a warm sense of proportion: stop error firmly and draw the line, but do not exterminate; strict without cruelty, keeping goodwill and offering a step down to mend one's ways—that is generosity and wisdom. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful.
