In cinnabar, Zhong Kui bends down with an open laugh, brows and eyes all smiles, while a little deer at his feet lifts its head toward him; the great deity sets aside his sword-hand and bows his usually upright waist. Gentle, warm lines turn all authority into tenderness—strength and softness reconciled, man and deer at ease, the scene brimming with childlike warmth.

"Zhong Kui Comes to See the Deer" portrays an iron man's tenderness. The demon-quelling deity who chills a hundred ghosts makes a special visit to a little fawn: might and gentleness, awe and kindness are reconciled here. True strength, it tells us, is never unrelenting ferocity; to know how to bend down in tenderness and feel pity for the small is a complete and noble character. The auspicious deer (a homophone for "prosperity") coming forward also portends blessing and peace attending one's path. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit.
