"The Demon-Smiter" is crisp and final—Zhong Kui's most classic role: sword in hand, he removes evil without indulgence. Folk belief holds he can strike down every malicious spirit and restore a clean world. Through the taut, sword-swinging pose the artist conveys the courage to face ugliness head-on and dare to draw the blade: no yielding on matters of principle, no compromise with wickedness—the resolve to act when action is due is precisely the responsibility needed to guard what is good. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks.
