Five Hundred Arhats · No.460 The Venerable Mastery of Dharma

'Mastery of Dharma' means attaining great freedom over all dharmas, sporting in psychic powers, penetrating the Dharma without bondage, teaching freely, at liberty within all dharmas; the name marks one free in the Dharma, penetrating without hindrance. The venerable looks unconstrained with a free air, possessing the ease of mastery over dharmas, penetrating without bondage, teaching freely, sporting in all dharmas with the wisdom of mastery.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
