Five Hundred Arhats · No.408 The Venerable Tamed, Concentrated Store

'Tamed, concentrated store' means skilled in taming body and mind, abiding in right concentration, storing merit, gaining stillness through taming and opening the store through stillness; the name marks one skilled in taming and stillness, with an inner store of virtue. The venerable makes a taming gesture with a reserved look, possessing the reserve of taming body and mind, abiding in right concentration, storing merit, opening the inner store of virtue through taming and stillness.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
