Five Hundred Arhats · No.356 The Venerable Mind Settled in Stillness

'Mind settled in stillness' means the heart abides in right concentration, wisdom issuing from stillness, deciding all dharmas through it, one-pointed and unshaken; the name marks one whose heart is ever in stillness, judging dharmas through it. The venerable sits cross-legged with a settled look, possessing the composure of a heart in right stillness, wisdom from concentration, deciding all dharmas, one-pointed and unshaken.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
