Five Hundred Arhats · No.353 The Venerable Joyful Without Attachment

'Joyful without attachment' means ever glad yet unstained by every object, joyful without dissipation, happy without clinging, forming no bond of craving within Dharma-joy; the name marks one joyful and free, liberated through non-attachment. The venerable wears a glad face with a free look, possessing the ease of constant gladness, non-attachment to objects, free in joy, ever abiding in Dharma-joy with an unattached heart.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
