Five Hundred Arhats · No.341 The Venerable Mind Arising from Consciousness

'Mind arising from consciousness' means knowing all dharmas appear from one's own consciousness with no dharma outside it, contemplating them as consciousness-only without clinging to outer objects; the name marks one who understands the consciousness-only principle, dharmas born of mind. The venerable makes an inward-contemplating gesture with an introspective look, possessing the inward focus of knowing consciousness-only arising, seeing dharmas as mind-only, not clinging to objects, turning to illumine the mind-source and penetrating the consciousness-only principle.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
