Five Hundred Arhats · No.256 The Venerable Unmoving Mind

'Unmoving mind' means the heart abides unshaken, unmoved by the eight worldly winds, the mind-ground firm as Sumeru, outer objects unable to stir it; the name marks one who does not move his heart, whom the eight winds cannot shift. The venerable looks set, firm as a rock, possessing the steadiness of an unmoving heart, not carried by objects, unshaken by the eight winds, abiding in the true Dharma without waver.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
