Five Hundred Arhats · No.130 The Venerable Jewel Banner

'Jewel banner' takes the true Dharma as the supreme victory banner, raising the Dharma-banner high in the assembly to defeat opposing doctrines; the banner is a Buddhist emblem of unexcelled triumph. The venerable stands upright with a solemn expression, possessing the majesty and confidence of one who plants the Dharma-banner, propagates the teaching to benefit beings and wins the supreme banner in the Dharma.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
