Five Hundred Arhats · No.60: Venerable Jinshan Jueyi — Minimalist Line Drawing (「白描」)
The inscription here reads only "Jinshan" (「金山」): the painter renders the venerable in the minimalist line-drawing manner (「白描」, reduced brush) — pure ink lines, no colour applied (「不施一色」), form and spirit complete in a few strokes, achieving more with less. The brushwork is spare, light and ethereal; in the vast negative space appears the Zen realm of "originally not a single thing" (「本来无一物」) — the simpler the trace, the deeper the mastery it reveals.
A distinctive branch of the Five Hundred Arhats series, the minimalist line-drawing edition carries the fullest meaning in the fewest strokes. Set against the standard freehand edition — one elaborate, one sparse — the two bring out each other's beauty: a rare specimen for savouring Li Zongyi's brush language and for comparative collecting. Each painting is a hand-painted one-of-a-kind original, impossible to duplicate.
