In ink, Zhong Kui holds his sword level, body leaning forward like a drawn bow, long beard streaming back, swift wind seeming to pass beneath his feet; the ink is vigorous, every stroke exerting force, muscles and robe-folds tensed with forward drive—the whole work brims with the self-propelled momentum of one who forges ahead without needing the whip.

Zhong Kui's forward-leaning, sword-level stance is precisely a state of life that waits on no one and takes initiative: no retreat before difficulty, no lying flat after setback, always keeping an upward drive. The artist encourages us: life's splendor is often found on the very road where one grits one's teeth and presses on; that self-driven, never-conceding spirit is worth more than any single success or failure. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks.
