Five Hundred Arhats · No.472 The Venerable Wish-Fulfilling Adornment

The name "Ruyiza" is recorded in the Southern Song Arhat-Name Stele: "wish-fulfilling" is the cintāmaṇi jewel granting every wish, and "adornment" means virtues interwoven; like a wish-jewel he is adorned with every virtue and free in all wishes. The name marks one who fulfills wishes and is adorned with every virtue. The venerable makes a jewel-holding gesture with a free look, possessing wish-fulfillment, adornment with every virtue, every wish granted, and the ease of benefiting beings through wish-jewel virtue.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
