Five Hundred Arhats · No.471 The Venerable Complete in Deportment

'Complete in deportment' means fully endowed with dignified bearing, complete in the four deportments of walking, standing, sitting and lying, grave and orderly in bearing, without breach of precepts; the name marks one complete in dignified bearing, unbroken in discipline. The venerable makes a composed gesture with a solemn look, possessing the gravity of complete deportment, the four bearings without lack, grave order, cultivating himself through pure discipline.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
