Five Hundred Arhats · No.423 The Venerable Supreme Victory Banner

'Supreme victory banner' means raising the banner of the supreme true Dharma, like a general raising his standard, most excellent among dharmas, setting high the Dharma-banner to defeat wrong views; the name marks one supremely transcendent, raising the Dharma-banner high. The venerable has a lofty presence and surpassing look, possessing the eminence of raising the true Dharma-banner, supremely transcendent, defeating wrong views, marking the true Dharma with the supreme banner.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
