Five Hundred Arhats · No.333 The Venerable Worthy of Offerings

'Worthy of offerings' is the arhat who has cut defilement and deserves the fine offerings of gods and men, accepting invitations to receive alms; the name marks a worthy sage, a pure field of merit. The venerable makes a receiving or accepting gesture with a pure look, possessing the purity of a field of merit worthy of offerings, defilement cut, accepting invitations, receiving offerings so beings may plant merit.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
