Five Hundred Arhats · No.301 The Venerable Stainless Conduct

'Stainless conduct' means every holy act cultivated is pure and free of stain, beyond all dust, like a white lotus rising from water without being wet, conduct in accord with purity; the name marks one whose holy conduct is stainless, pure as a lotus. The venerable looks clean and transcendent, possessing the purity of stainless holy conduct, beyond defilement, like a lotus from the water, adorning bodhi through stainless wondrous action.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
