Five Hundred Arhats · No.263 The Venerable Mountain of the Dharma Wheel

'Mountain of the Dharma wheel' means the wheel of Dharma firm as a mountain, turning the great wheel while standing unmoved, the teaching breaking false obstacles like a wheel yet solid as a peak; the name marks one who turns the Dharma like a mountain, firm and unshaken. The venerable stands upright with a grave look, possessing the gravity of the ever-turning wheel, unmoved as a mountain, crushing false obstacles and settling the world through firm true Dharma.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
