Five Hundred Arhats · No.134 The Venerable Jewel View

'Jewel view' says right view is a jewel, hardest to obtain, using pure right view to illumine and break error; the name marks one whose knowing and seeing are upright, who sees the way clearly. The venerable's gaze is inward and his expression clear, possessing the clarity that prizes right view, contemplates the true nature of phenomena and gains the pure eye at the stage of seeing the way.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
