'Realizing emptiness' is to know the emptiness of all phenomena, and 'beyond names' means to leave behind all labels and marks where the path of speech ends; the name marks one who realizes emptiness and posits not a single dharma, name and mark both dissolved. The venerable looks gentle and open-browed, showing the clarity that leaves the marks of words and names behind and points directly to the original mind in the nameless, markless.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease.
