Zhong Kui | Heaven-Born Wisdom | Traditional Hand-Painted Chinese Ink Figure Painting | 101x50cm
In ink, Zhong Kui stands tall sword in hand, raising his face to heaven, upright and noble, long beard and sword-point both directed upward; the ink lines rise straight and clean, joint by joint, as though he stands upheld by heaven, established through wisdom—a clear, upright, exalting qi coursing bottom to top through the whole work.
"Heaven-Born Wisdom" means that true wisdom is established as if by heaven—upright and luminous. Zhong Kui's "wisdom" is no cunning stratagem but the great wisdom that follows heaven and humanity and keeps to the right way. The artist encourages us: root your standing in wisdom—not the petty cleverness of scheming against others, but the foundational wisdom that distinguishes right from wrong, follows the nature of things and walks the straight path. Nourish such wisdom and one stands firm, acts upright, and goes far. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit. Each piece is an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
