In cinnabar, Zhong Kui stands alone on his night watch, face lifted to gaze, long beard falling, figure lone and austere; one hand on his sword, the other slightly raised as if peering into the depths of the dark. Red lines on the darkness-like blank space trace a quiet vigilance—cold and clear yet steadfast, as if one could hear the night-watch drum and the night wind.

"Another Night of Watching" is about keeping watch: while the world sleeps, Zhong Kui still watches through the night, and the word "another" tells of devotion renewed day after day. No moment of peace is ever simply owed—it exists because someone quietly bears responsibility where no one sees. The artist pays tribute to those who stand faithful at their post for the long haul, reminding us that behind every sense of safety stands someone carrying the burden through the dark on our behalf. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful.
