Unusually, this work's inscription sits on the right—the only right-sided colophon in the series, in ink with light color. The figure stands majestically at center, ink touched with ochre and cinnabar, face warmly flushed, robes broad and bearing magnanimous; balanced left-right and well-paced in density, ink and red together bring forth an upright, approachable yet venerable "Kui among men."

"A Kui Among Men" writes Zhong Kui's legend through the single word "great"—great not only in form but in heart and responsibility. Folk tradition honors this demon-catcher as the very emblem of guarding the right and expelling the crooked; the title blends affection with admiration. It commends an upright way of being: stand correct and square, treat others generously, and be equal to the word "great" in both family and community. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful.
