In ink, Zhong Kui presses forward on his sword, body lowered like a drawn bow about to release; brows and eyes locked in focus, short beard thrust ahead, robe lines pulled backward into taut strokes by the momentum. Tight but never stagnant, the work stores the drive to advance against difficulty and never turn back.

"The Valiant One" praises whoever summons courage and steps forward. Even with a host of spirits before him, Zhong Kui only advances; through him the artist voices an attitude toward hardship—to feel fear yet go forward anyway is true bravery. In moments of hesitation, may the viewer borrow a measure of that forward courage from this sword-pressing figure. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit.
