Rendered entirely in cinnabar red, Zhong Kui presses his sword and strides as if riding the wind; his long beard and robes stream sharply backward and gusts seem to coil beneath his feet. A few vigorous red lines, swift and dynamic, make the figure arrive as if carried by a gale.

The title "Wind Speed" likens the speed with which Zhong Kui dispels evil to the wind—the moment mischief stirs, he overtakes it before it can hide. The work conveys decisive, unhesitating confidence: with uprightness in heart, act like a clean, sweeping gust, swift and sure. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit.
