Five Hundred Arhats · No.425 The Venerable Unhindered Action

'Unhindered action' means action that penetrates everywhere, without obstruction in any place, free in walking, standing, sitting and lying, moving through the world with a heart that grasps nothing; the name marks one whose action is unhindered, penetrating and free. The venerable makes a wandering gesture with an open look, possessing the ease of unhindered action, penetrating freedom, a heart without obstruction, converting beings through unhindered action.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
