'Celestial sound' means a voice like heavenly music and chant, pure and gentle, far beyond the world, praising the three jewels with pure celestial sound, making hearers' hearts glad; the name marks one whose voice is pure, like a wondrous heavenly echo. The venerable makes a raising-voice gesture with a clear, soaring look, possessing the clarity of pure celestial sound, gentle and far-heard, praising with pure voice, instantly stilling the hearer's worldly toil.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
