Five Hundred Arhats · No.350 The Venerable Great Medicine

'Great medicine' means giving the great medicine like the king of physicians, healing beings' grave illness of affliction with the great medicine of the Buddha's teaching, the medicine curing upon arrival; the name marks one who carries the great physician's method, skilled in healing heart-illness. The venerable makes a giving-medicine or comforting gesture with a charitable look, possessing the care of taking Dharma as medicine, skilled in healing heart-illness, giving medicine to fit the disease, saving beings with the great medicine of the Buddha's teaching.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
