Five Hundred Arhats · No.313 The Venerable Rich in Deportment

'Rich in deportment' means the four deportments of walking, standing, sitting and lying are all complete, the bearing serene, motion and rest in measure, perfecting the manifold rules of dignified conduct; the name marks one complete in deportment, orderly in advance and rest. The venerable straightens robe and body with a refined look, possessing the elegance of complete fourfold deportment, serene bearing, measured motion, a model for the saṅgha through pure dignity.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
