Five Hundred Arhats · No.300 The Venerable Abiding in the Royal Path

'Abiding in the royal path' means resting in the true Dharma through the way of a righteous king, like a wheel-turning monarch who teaches the world by the right way, abiding in the true path to reach all beings; the name marks one who abides in the royal path, transforming the age through righteousness. The venerable looks dignified and gracious, possessing the poise of abiding in the true path, ruling like a king, winning beings through virtue, settling them through the way of true Dharma.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
